Kelley ************** Contact: Kelley Lynn Kassa Object Management Group +1-508-820 430 kassa@omg.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE COLLABORATION RESULTS IN OBJECT-BASED OLTP SPECIFICATION Groupe Bull, IBM, ICL, IONA Technologies, Novell, SunSoft, Tandem Computers, Tivoli Systems and Transarc Corporation jointly develop Object Transaction Service Framingham, MA -- September 12, 1994 - The Object Management Group (OMG)announced today nine major on-line transaction processing (OLTP) and object technology(OT) vendors have jointly developed a specification for an Object Transaction Service. The collaboration by Groupe Bull, IBM, ICL Plc, IONA Technologies, Ltd., Novell, Inc.,SunSoft, Inc., Tandem Computers, Tivoli Systems and Transarc Corporation has been approved by OMG's Object Services Task Force and is progressing towards adoption into the Object Management Architecture (OMA). "OLTP is a mission-critical aspect of corporate computing," stated Chris Stone, president, OMG. "This Object Transaction Service will enable OLTP end users such as banks and airlines to reap the benefits of distributed object technology." The Object Transaction Service will bring global desktop access to multi-vendor OLTP systems. Transaction applications and data can be accessed by authorized users regardless of location. The service will enable customers to save time and money through simpler transaction processing programming, which benefits from the reusability, portability and interoperability of distributed object computing. The selected submission specifies transaction processing in a CORBA*-conformant and COSS* 1-conformant multi-vendor heterogeneous environment. The Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) Version 1.2 details portability for Objec Request Brokers (ORBs*), while the Common Object Services Specification, Volume 1 (COSS 1) specifies Object Naming, Object Events and Object Life Cycles. The Object Transaction Service will also be conformant with th upcoming CORBA 2.0 specification, which details interface repository, initialization and interoperability. The Object Services Task Force voted to recommend the proposal at recent OMG meeting in Dublin, Ireland. The submission will now be voted on by the OMG Technical Committee (TC) and the Board of Directors. Bot the TC and the Board of Directors are expected to vote on the Object Transaction Service by the end of the year Additional Object Services Recommended to the TC OMG's Object Services Task Force also voted on the additional objec services that will complete COSS* 2. The Task Force has recommended Object Services on Concurrency, Relationships and Externalization. Transarc submitted the recommended Concurrency proposal, the Relationships submission was made by Groupe Bull, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Olivetti, Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme and SunSoft, and the Externalization proposal was developed by IBM and SunSoft. COSS 2 will be part of the Object Services section of the OMA. OMG believes that wide-scale industry adoption of the OMA and its supporting interface specifications, such as CORBA and COSS will provide produc developers and technology users alike with the means to build heterogeneous software systems distributed across all major hardware, operating systems and language environments. OMG is the world's largest software development consortium with a membership of over 430 software vendors, software developers and end users. Established in 1989, its mission is to promote the theory and practice of object technology for the development of distribute computing systems. The goal is to provide a common architectural framework for object-oriented applications based on widely available interface specifications. OMG is headquartered in Framingham, MA, USA, and has a Western office in Boulder, CO, USA, as well as international marketing offices in the UK, Germany and Japan.
